On March 8 hundreds of Ithaca area citizens rallied in support of all the mothers, sisters & daughters whose families have been impacted by our current criminal injustice system. We gathered in solidarity with them, and to call for increased investment in mental health and addiction recovery services, and re-entry supports including affordable housing and transportation in place of additional jail cell construction. Our immediate goal is to stop the expansion of the Tompkins County Jail!
We began with a noisy and boisterous march across town, complete with puppets, signs, noisemakers, drumming and lots of chanting. A crowd of almost 300 of us then packed into GreenStar Co-op’s “Space” to share a meal and hear from local women and children, and from keynote speaker Taylar Nouvelle from #WhoSpeaksForMe, whose lives have been upended by the criminal injustice system.
The event was organized by local activist Phoebe Brown and friends, including Decarcerate Tompkins County, Rainbow Healing Center, Multicultural Resource Center and Ithaca SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice).
